Summer Circulation
Anyone check out books to students over the summer? If yes, please share your experience. How many books were students allowed to check out? How many books were note returned? How many students took advantage of the opportunity? What was the student response?

My library was open for 3 hours once a week for the month of July last summer. It was awesome. Most kids checked out two books (some I allowed three). I proposed opening the library to keep our students reading and taking AR quizzes. I would not say a majority of students used the library, but certainly a good number did. The students that did come in really enjoyed it. I even ran a mini-book club during that time. All the books borrowed were returned - even if it was at the beginning of the school year.
This year the library is (hopefully) going to be painted, so I don’t think we’ll circulate books - but I will be around to perhaps facilitate a partnership with the public library and help students take AR quizzes. Ideally, I would have the library open the month of August (instead of July) and be here two days a week for 3 or 4 hours (with pay, of course).

I allow teachers to check out materials over the summer. In fact, I leave a sheet so that if they come in during the summer months, they can continue to check items out. However, I don’t allow students checkouts. The public libraries here do a great job pulling the kids in and making books available to them.
