NEA Foundation-Student Achievement Grants

The NEA Foundation provides funds to improve the academic achievement of students in U.S. public schools and public higher education institutions in any subject area. The proposed work should engage students in critical-thinking and problem solving that deepen their knowledge of standards-based subject matter The grant amount is $5,000. Funds may be used for resource materials, supplies, equipment, transportation, software, or scholars-in-residence. Applications are reviewed three times per year, every year. KIDS Consortium: Green Schools Mini-Grants

KIDS Consortium, with support from State Farm Youth Advisory Board, is offering mini-grants for “green” service-learning projects developed by K-12 schools in New England. Grants of up to $750 will support “green school” service-learning projects, such as energy efficiency and recycling, proposed by K-12 educators, students, and community organizations working with youth. Funded projects must solve a problem or address a local need related to making schools and neighborhoods healthier and more environmentally sustainable. Students involved in these projects will have an opportunity to participate in a 2010 Green Schools Student Summit in order to share their projects with students from around the region. 2009 Healthy Sprouts Award

If you are interested in starting a garden at your school consider applying for the Healthy Sprouts Award.  To be eligible for the 2009 award, a school or organization must plan to garden in 2010 with at least fifteen children between the ages of 3 and 18.  The selection of winners is based on the demonstrated relationship between the garden program and nutrition and hunger issues in the United States.

Maximum Award:  $200-$500;  Number of Awards:  20

AASL Awards

SLMS Awards

Applications for the following SLMS awards are now being accepted.

  • The Beatrice E. Griggs Elementary Administrator’s Award and the Secondary Administrator’s Award are awarded to building or district administrators who have effectively supported the maintenance and improvement of a School Library Media Program in NY State.

The following awards are presented to current members of SLMS/NYLA:

  • The SLMS/Gale Conference Award provides $500 for a direct service school library media specialist to attend a full SLMS Conference, being held April 30 - May 2, 2009 in Saratoga Springs.
  • The SLMS/Follett Scholarship Award provides $750 for continuing education in the field of School Library Studies to a certified SLMS currently employed in NYS.
  • The Robert E. Barron Cultural Media Award has been increased to provide $500 towards the purchase of humanistic non-book materials to enrich the library collection.
  • The Beatrice E. Griggs Scholarship Award provides $1,000 plus SLMS conference registration for an individual currently enrolled in a program, including online programs outside of New York State, that leads to certification as a New York State school library media specialist.
  • The Carole A. Kearney Memorial Scholarship Awards provide $250 for a certified SLMS, employed in NYS, to attend the annual SLMS Leadership Retreat held in August, 2009.
  • NEW! The SLMS Emerging Leaders Sponsorship Award provides $1,000 towards expenses ($500 per conference) for attendance at the 2010 ALA Mid-Winter and ALA Annual conferences to a new New York State librarian. Winners are given the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, network with peers, and get an inside look at ALA.

Foundation Center Resources: A Grant Finding Workshop for SLMS

The SLS is hosting a grant finding workshop for SLMS on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at the Adriance Memorial Library.  Participants will be introduced to the resources available at the Poughkeepsie satellite of the Foundation Center, the nation’s largest clearinghouse for information on philanthropy.  Emphasis will be on training for successful use of the Foundation Directory Online (FDO) database to identify potential grant sources for school libraries and for funding programs related to education, reading, and literacy.  Hands-on practice will be a significant component of the training.

NEH Picturing America Grants

Picturing America is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), in cooperation with the American Library Association (ALA). The goal of Picturing America is to enhance the teaching, study, and understanding of American history and culture by bringing some of America’s greatest works of art into school classrooms and public libraries.

Picturing America will provide K-12 schools and public libraries with 40 images of American art, an illustrated teachers resource book, and a web site containing additional information including lesson plans.

2008 SLMSSENY Awards

You have until February 29, 2008 to apply for the following awards from SLMSSENY (School Library Media Specialists of Southeastern New York):

  • $500 SLMSSENY Scholarship for students enrolled in a program leading to certification as a School Library Media Specialist or a NYS certified school library media specialists looking to further their professional growth and development through continuing education within the field of library studies/technology.
  • $500 Bea Griggs Memorial Incentive Grant to fund innovative and exemplary programs which promote excellence in library service to children and young adults. Total award of up to $500 may be presented at each level: Elementary (K-6) and Secondary (7-12).
  • SLMSSENY Administrator’s Award recognizes an administrator who has been responsible for initiation, maintenance, and/or the improvement of a School Library Media Program in the SLMSSENY region during the past three to five years or longer.

All application forms are available on the SLMSSENY website: www.slmsseny.org/. You must be a member of SLMSSENY to qualify. Membership forms are also available on the site.

Formal recognition of winners will take place during the Saturday luncheon of the SLMS Conference in Tarrytown. The conference will take place May 1 - 3, 2008 at the Doubletree Hotel, Tarrytown, NY. Registration forms for the conference are also available on the website.

TEAMS Award 2008 Call for Entries
Educators should enter now to be recognized! Do you know of a library media specialist who has collaborated with a teacher to promote learning, increase student achievement and develop 21st century skills? Linworth Publishing and Gale have partnered to recognize and encourage these important efforts.

The three award winners will receive:
* $2,500 (U.S.) cash award
* Thomson Gale products (approximate value $500 U.S.)
* A one-year subscription to Library Media Connection, the professional magazine for school library media and technology specialists (approximate value $69 U.S.)
