<p>The deadline for the SLMS awards applications is fast approaching!</p>
<p>The <strong>Beatrice E. Griggs Elementary Administrator&#8217;s Award </strong>and the <strong>Secondary Administrator&#8217;s Award </strong>are awarded to building or district administrators who have effectively supported the maintenance and improvement of a School Library Media Program in NY State.</p>
<p>The following awards are presented to current members of SLMS/NYLA:</p>
<p>The <strong>SLMS/Gale Conference Award</strong> provides $500 for a direct service school library media specialist to attend a full SLMS Conference, being held<br />
April 29 - May 1, 2009 in Albany.</p>
<p>The <strong>SLMS/Follett Scholarship Award</strong> provides $750 for continuing education in the field of School Library Studies to a certified SLMS currently employed in NYS.</p>
<p>The <strong>Robert E. Barron Cultural Media Awar</strong>d provides $500 towards the purchase of humanistic non-book materials to enrich the library collection.</p>
<p>The <strong>Beatrice E. Griggs Scholarship Award</strong> provides $1,000 plus SLMS conference registration for an individual currently enrolled in a program, including online programs outside of New York State, that leads to certification as a New York State school library media specialist.</p>
<p>The <strong>Carole A. Kearney Memorial Scholarship Awards</strong> provide $250 for a certified SLMS, employed in NYS, to attend the annual SLMS Leadership Retreat held in August, 2009.</p>

Writing Month Competition, a competition open to everyone which<br />
encourages writers around the world to pen a 50,000 word opus in 30<br />
days.  Christine not only met the goal of 50,000, she more than doubled<br />
it, coming in a 110,000 words.</p>

Although the ability to run a K-8 library is a given, excellent social skills, a warm heart, and a sense of humor will be the key to a successful library program. This is a rare opportunity for librarians wishing to serve the underserved.</p>

<p>This library was created through a 1.3 million dollar grant from the Robin Hood Foundation. It has every amenity you can think of including a FLEX schedule, and it is well endowed, receiving an additional $13,000 in grant funds for books last year.</p>
