Empire State Book Festival and Gala

NYLA is launching the first annual Empire State Book Festival and Gala on April 9-10th at the Empire State Plaza in Albany. The two day event starts off with the Gala - NYS Writers Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Friday, April 9th at 6 pm at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Albany. The NYS Writers Hall of Fame will showcase the rich literary heritage of NYS by inducting two current authors - Mary Gordon and Robert Caro and 10 past authors into the Hall of Fame. Tickets are $75 and are tax-deductible. Proceeds will be used to support the Writers Hall of Fame/Book Festival.

The Empire State Book Festival starts at 10 am on Saturday, April 10th with Keynote Author - Gregory Maguire of Wicked fame. The Festival includes panel discussions, author talks, story-telling, etc. from 120 writers, poets, journalists, illustrators, etc. The event is free and open to the public. Questioning: The Key to Higher Level Research

Critical thinking skills are essential for any good research project. These skills, include the ability for students to locate appropriate sources, read critically, evaluate sources and information, analyze information, and ultimately reach a conclusion, are developed through research projects that require students to ask difficult questions rather than answer simple ones. This workshop will discuss essential questions and techniques for teaching good questioning. A round table discussion will allow participants to share teaching techniques related to questioning. Participants should bring examples of scaffolding models, lessons, etc. to share.

Talking Book and Braille Library (TBBL)

A major transition is occurring with the Talking Book and Braille Library at the State Library. TBBL has transitioned to a new internal computer operating system for managing the services provided, and has also begun the first distribution of “new” digital machines and the first downloading of online talking books. Thousands of readers (listeners) will be receiving new (much smaller and lighter weight) machines on which to play books and magazines. This important service is available free to anyone who cannot read ‘normal’ print or who cannot hold a book. It is easy to get signed up. HRVH Historical Newspapers Website Launch

The Southeastern NY Library Resources Council is pleased to announce the launch of a new website, HRVH Historical Newspapers http://news.hrvh.org/, part of the Hudson River Valley Heritage (HRVH) service. The Kingston Daily Freeman is the first newspaper to be included in this new digital newspaper repository and was completely digitized for the years 1903 to 1912. The entire contents of the newspaper issues can be searched by word and browsed by date. Complete issues of the newspaper can be viewed by full page or individual articles can be highlighted and viewed.
