New York Statewide Summer Reading Program
The 2009 Statewide Summer Reading Program theme is “The Arts” with the slogans “Be Creative @ Your Library” (children) and “Express Yourself @ Your Library” (teens). In addition, this year New York is celebrating the Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial; therefore, New York State History related materials will be highlighted through the additional slogan, “Be Creative: Explore New York”.
This year the New York State Library has created a packet of New York Statewide Summer Reading Program materials for school library media specialists to use with students, faculty, and local public libraries.
There are three components of the New York Statewide School
Library Partnering Packet:
- The School Library Partner Manual: an overview of the 2009 theme, ideas for partnering with local public libraries, promotional materials, and the Collaborative Summer Reading Program (CSLP) arts inspired readings lists.
- Be Creative @ your library: Explore New York: the New York State History Addendum to the 2009 CSLP Summer Reading Program Manual. Created by the New York State Library.
- Be Creative, Explore New York: A Picture of NYS History, Culture, and Diversity. The New York State Library, in partnership with the New York Library Association’s Youth Services Section and School Library Media Section, has created four selected reading lists (picture books, elementary, tween, and teen & up) that celebrate the history, culture, and diversity of New York State. The lists are designed to provide a “flavor” of New York State and to spark an interest in the diversity and history of the state.
All School Library Media Specialists are invited to to visit the http://www.summerreadingnys.org website for a wealth of summer reading program ideas and information.
